If you are in Singapore and you are looking for a quick escape from the very busy metropolitan, Batam is one of the first place that would come into your mind. It's just a less than an hour travel via fast ferry from Singapore.
We booked a package tour for Batam that already includes ferry boat transport, hotel accomodation, and a van that will tour us around Batam. It is recommended for first time visitors to have a package tour when going to Batam english language is not used as means of communication here so it would be a bit challenging locating places you want to go.
There are lots of hotels in Batam that you could choose to stay, from budget hotels to a beautiful grand hotels.
We stayed in Mercure hotel for 1 night. It's a budget hotel but with nice amenities. Buffet breakfast is already included in the package. They have clean large pool and beautiful pool lounge where you could just simply relax. They also have gym and spa. The room is nice but it is recommended not to take lower rooms and facing the road because the sound of cars passing is still heard inside the room.
One of the must go place here in Batam is the Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall. It is the largest mall in Batam. It offers same things you could see in other malls but one of the reason why it became a tourist destination is its architecture design of it's food street with an open indoor building similar to Bugis Junction in Singapore. We tried to their local food there and we love their fried fish and squid.

Batam's closeness to Singapore, friendly locals and delicious local food makes it a perfect place to have a quick escape to the busy life here in Singapore.
