Macau is a small island close to Hong Kong. Unlike it's neighbor Hong Kong where its economy is highly dependent on international trade and finance, Macau is more on tourism and gambling. It is a gambling destination giving its title as the "Sin City of the East". It's profits from gambling industry even dwarfs the original "Sin City" Las Vegas. Come and join us as we explore this tiny island with giant gambling industry.
From Hong Kong, it took us almost an hour via ferry to reach Macau. Many tour guides will offer their services as soon as you exit the immigration. We saw a lot of Filipino tour guides in there but unfortunately, we already have our own tour guide which is already included in our package tour.
Grand Lisboa Macau |
While we were inside the shuttle and touring around the city, our tour guide asked us some trivia. One of it is "What is the second largest group of nationality in Macau?". Most answered Japanese, Koreans, Malay but one of the Singaporean tourist mentioned Filipino. And he is correct, the answer is Filipino. Probably it is due many talented Filipinos are working in casinos. Our tour guide even mentioned that Tagalog is one of the most used language in Macau.
MGM Grand Macau |
While we were touring around Macau, it is very noticeable that there were many structures being constructed. Our tour guide mentioned that some of those were for replacement of an old casinos, or for an expansion of casino or for a new casino. Its amazing to see how the gambling industry keeps on progressing despite seeing so many casinos already in Macau.
At the left side pictures are just some of the well known casinos in Macau. Other popular casinos are Wynn Macau, Sands Macau and Galaxy Macau.
City of Dreams Macau |
Our tour guide has mentioned that our first stop is in Babylon Casino. It is said that its the first "boutique casino" in Macau. She mentioned that some part of the complex will undergo redevelopment and that includes the demolition of the man-made volcano and Tang Dynasty complex. It will be replaced by 5 star hotel, dinosaur museum, health club, a yacht club and amusement arcade.
Our next stop is Kun Lam Statue. It is a 20 meter high bronze statue of a Buddhist deity of mercy. It is a good tourist spot as the statue is located at the bay. It is said that if you make a wish in the statue, it will be granted.
After visiting the statue, we went to Restaturante Vinha to have our lunch which is already included in our package tour. It is a Portuguese western restaurant with a romantic ambiance. We ordered porkchop and had some wine. Many locals/tourists seem to eat here. The price of food here is quite expensive compared to other restaurants in the area.
Next we went, to Macau tower. It is one of the most iconic structures in Macau together with Grand Lisboa Macau. It measures around 338 meters. Our tour guide mentioned that Stanley Ho have budget to build the tower taller than 338 meters but for Chinese belief, the height of the tower is lucky. The tower have observation deck which offers the best panoramic view of Macau. For those who love bungee jump, you can try it here and it is considered as one of the highest skyjump in the world.
After visiting the iconic Macau tower, we went to visit the ruins of Saint Paul's Cathedral. It is undoubtedly one of the most popular tourist spots in Macau. There are so many tourists in this area. There are also many souvenir shops around the area.
The last stop for our Macau tour is the Venetian Casino Resort. We are so excited to visit this casino because of its San Luca canal. This casino is so huge that it is considered as the largest casino in the world. Our tourist guide even gave each one of us an old cellphone so everyone could still move freely around the casino without having difficulty to find each other.
Truly, Macau is a giant gambling destination that is continuously growing. With all the developments here, could we really say now that Macau is now really bigger than the original Sin City, Las Vegas? Share your thoughts and experience.
BTW, Here are some of our random pictures in Macau.
